Fibromyalgia literally means aching muscle fibers. An extreme case of persistent general aches and pains, general symptoms of Fibromyalgia include disabling fatigue, aching muscles, fever, headache, muscle spasms, sensitivity to light and heat, sleep disturbances, swollen glands, upper respiratory tract infections, difficulty concentrating, fever, irritability, loss of appetite and depression.
Fibromyalgia Syndrome is affecting between 3 percent and 6 percent of the American population and it could be viewed as a role disorder as seventy-five percent of those affected are women aged 30 to 59. According to the American College of Rheumatology, since women are more prone to this diseases, a woman could have Fibromyalgia Syndrome if she has 11 tender points out of 18 possible spots on her body in places such as elbows, shoulder muscles, sides of the hips or front of the chest. The pain must last three months or longer.
The cause of fibromyalgia continues to elude the medical community. Researchers speculate about factors that may contribute to fibromyalgia such as an infection, physical or emotional trauma or hormonal changes. However, medical science considers food allergy and food sensitivity, nutrient deficiencies, environmental allergies and sensitivities as the basic causes for Fibromyalgia.
Professor Jayney Goddard, President of the Complementary Medical Association believes that people with fibromyalgia can benefit from eating a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables as extra fiber ensure healthy bowel function that is essential for good health. He further suggests avoiding shellfish, processed or junk food and coffee, tea or soft drinks and refined carbohydrates such as sugar and white flour, which also cause high acidity and slow down the body's detoxification process. The trace elements, vitamins and minerals supplied by fruits and vegetables, according to Professor Goddard, are especially important to help maintain and repair muscles.
